Campbell razzed in return to San Jose

Defenseman Brian Campbell wasn't sure what kind of reception he would get from the HP Pavilion crowd Wednesday night when he showed up in a Chicago Blackhawks jersey, but it didn't take long to find out.

He touched the puck for the first time about 2:20 into the first period and the booing began, and it continued throughout the game.

It was Campbell's first appearance in San Jose since choosing not to re-sign with the Sharks last June, then agreeing to a $57.1 million, eight-year contract with Chicago on July 1.

Earlier in the day, Campbell preferred to look back on his four months as a Shark rather than speculate about his welcome that night.

"They treated me really good when I was here and I thank them for that," Campbell said of the fans. "They were really enthusiastic and they sold out the building. They want to win here. It was good like that."

Campbell dined Tuesday night at the home of Joe Thornton, his childhood friend who grew up near his Ontario home.

"I had a little dinner at Joe's house last night. It was good to see him and my old bedroom," said Campbell, who boarded with Thornton during his stay with the Sharks last season. "We had a blast."

At the time Campbell signed with Chicago, he let it be known that he wanted to play closer to his family, which still lives in Ontario.

Early returns of online voting show that none of the five Sharks on the NHL's Western Conference All-Star ballot are close to a position in the starting lineup.

Running totals are available at the voting web site but the league issued its first count Wednesday.

Results to this point show three Detroit Red Wings Marian Hossa, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterbeg leading all forwards. San Jose's Joe Thornton is in the seventh spot and Patrick Marleau is 11th.

Detroit's Niklas Lidstrom and Calgary's Dion Phaneuf lead all defensemen. Sharks blue-liner Dan Boyle is in the fourth spot and Rob Blake is in seventh.

Among Western Conference goalies, Evgeni Nabokov is in third place, well behind Vancouver's Roberto Luongo in the top spot.

Voting ends Jan. 2 and there is no limit to the number of times anyone can vote.

Chicago forward Adam Burish was a late scratch and the Blackhawks used seven defensemen against the Sharks. Chicago Coach Joel Quenneville said Burish, who tangled with Sharks defenseman Douglas Murray when the teams met in Chicago on Nov. 16, was recovering from a hard hit absorbed in practice Tuesday.
