Bruins win shootout, 2-1

CHICAGO - Some of the old Original Six feeling filled the United Center last night, and when the game was over, the verdict was settled by a New NHL shootout, with the Bruins walking away with a 2-1 win over the Blackhawks.

Blake Wheeler and P.J. Axelsson scored in the shootout, with Axelsson, the veteran checker, providing the winner as Boston's third shooter. Axelsson closed to the right post and snapped a clever backhander under the crossbar.

The Bruins connected for a 1-0 lead with 54 seconds remaining in the second period when Marco Sturm tipped in his fourth of the season. Cutting toward the right post with the Bruins skating with the man advantage, the winger put the shaft to a Zdeno Chara wrister from the right faceoff dot.

The Hawks, stymied by goalie Tim Thomas on 27 shots through the first two periods, finally potted the equalizer with 10:50 remaining in regulation and Chuck Kobasew in the penalty box serving a minor.

Jonathan Toews created the 1-1 tie by slipping behind Chara as Patrick Kane moved off the right halfboard with the puck. Kane unloaded a low, hard wrister that Toews put the touch to for his second goal this season.
